Area roundup - No. 4 Cougars run wild over 'Cats

THURMONT, Md. - Catoctin rushed for a season-high 415 yards as the No. 4 Cougars cruised to a 50-13 MVAL Antietam win over Williamsport on Friday.

Dave Burrier led the rushing attack with 170 yards, highlighted by a 39-yard touchdown run, while Ben Hobbs rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Venables also scored twice for the Cougars (6-2, 4-1), who led 36-0 at halftime.

Ben Vatavuk passed for 89 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to John Hose, while Mike O'Haver had a 6-yard TD run for the Wildcats (1-7, 0-5).

Archbishop Spalding 35 No. 5 St. John's-PH 20


BALTIMORE - Mike Rutland had 32 carries for 177 yards and three touchdowns as Archbishop Spalding scored 28 first-half points en route to defeating St. John's at Prospect Hall in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association matchup.

The Cavaliers (6-2, 2-2) scored 22 points in the sceond quarter.

Keith Ricca passed for 289 yards and two touchdowns on 32 of 43 passing. Max Morris caught 14 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, while Rob Haynos grabbed seven passes for 67 yards and a score. Randal Smedley added 62 yards of total offense for the Vikings (5-3, 3-3).

FREDERICK, Md. - Brian Lanning went 6-for-14 passing for 103 yards and ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns for Frederick as the Cadets defeated Liberty.

Bruce Dorsey had 32 carries for 213 yards and a score, Andrew Goodwin kicked a 29-yard field goal and Tommy Gilmore had 13 tackles and an interception for Frederick (4-4).

LAUREL, Md. - Kevin Olive completed 14 of 34 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns as St. Vincent Pallotti shut out Hancock.

Palotti receiver Tim Jennings caught seven passes for 111 yards in the victory.

Cumb. Valley 47, Chambersburg 0


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dan Lawlor rushed nine times for 126 yards and four touchdowns as nationally ranked Cumberland Valley routed Chambersburg.

Corey Bischof completed eight of 10 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles, whose defense had four interceptions and held the Trojans to minus-3 yards of total offense.

Bubba Heisler caught a Bischof pass for a score, and Josh Oswalt and Andy Casale each added a rushing touchdown for Cumberland Valley, ranked 13th in the country by www.rivalshigh.com

STEELTON, Pa. - Ryan Mohn threw for three touchdowns and ran for another for Steel-High.

Gerard Madden caught two of the scoring passes while Jamar Brown caught the other. Davelle Crawford ran for two touchdowns in the victory.

Hampshire 23, Musselman 10


ROMNEY, W.Va. - Alex Lee scored on a 13-yard touchdown run and later on a 40-yard run as Hampshire rolled up 203 rushing yards and rolled past Musselman.

The Trojans (4-3) needed a 7-yard score from T.M. Frye with 1:53 remaining to secure the win.

Matt Houghton had a 1-yard TD run and Steven Emswiler kicked a 35-yard field goal for Musselman (3-6), which outgained Hampshire, 266-245.

Susquenita 20, Waynesboro 13


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Waynesboro forced four turnovers and carried a 13-12 lead into the fourth quarter, but fell short in its quest to snap its 14-game losing streak.

Brett Potter scored the go-ahead, 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, while Blaine Leonard passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns for the Blackhawks (2-7). Shane Weldon had a 24-yard touchdown reception and Dustin Kauffman hauled in a 63-yard TD pass in the win.

Mike McKenzie and Wes Thebus had touchdown runs of 17 and 22, respectively, for an Indians offense that totaled just 119 total yards. Corey Livengood completed 6 of 14 passes for 31 yards for Waynesboro (0-9).

Big Spring 44, Greencastle 19


NEWVILLE, Pa. - Corey Furman totaled 330 yards of offense on 26 touches and scored four touchdowns as Big Spring strolled past Greencastle.

The Bulldogs (6-3) led 38-0 after three quarters before allowing 19 fourth-quarter points to the Blue Devils. Sean Cohick had a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown and an 88-yard kickoff return for another touchdown in the win.

Dustin Mowen ran for 73 yards and scored on a 12-yard run and Travis Smith had a 21-yard scoring run to highlight his 75 yards rushing. Smith also connected with Sean Guy for a 7-yard touchdown for Greencastle (3-6).

WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Andrew Perez led the Lions with a hat trick as they overwhelmed Fort Hill with 31 shots on goal in the Class 2A West first-round game.

Brian Beard, Robert Zeender, Ben Seidel, Jody Crum and Jason Love each added a goal for Walkersville (8-6-1).

FREDERICK, Md. - Amanda Storms had nine kills, three blocks and 12 digs as Hagerstown Community College remained undefeated in Maryland JuCo play with a 30-16, 30-14, 30-18 sweep of Frederick Community College.

Megan Miller had 10 kills and 14 digs, while Keri Jackson added 12 kills, four blocks and four aces for the Hawks (24-3, 12-0). Emily Beacher had six kills and 10 digs and Shea Storms had 33 assists in the win.

Monroe Jr. scores hole-in-one


WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Early Monroe Jr. of Frederick, Md., posted a hole-in-one at Glade Valley Golf Club. Early used a 9-iron on the eighth hole at 129 yards out from the senior tees. Harold Hart, Marty Goge and Leon Carlin witnessed the shot.
