October 26, 2003

HERSHEY, Pa. - Chambersburg placed three runners in the top 12 on the way to winning its 12th PIAA District 3 Class AAA girls cross country title Saturday at Milton Hershey Senior Hall Campus.

The Trojans, who last won districts in 1999, topped the 43-team field with 116 points. Garden Spot was second with 183, while Cumberland Valley was third with 184. The top five teams qualified for next week's state championships.

"Our main goal was to move on to states, but we definitely wanted to win the district title," Chambersburg first-year coach Chris Monheim said. "The district trophy is one of those ones you keep out for a while. It means a lot."

Senior Kylee Schuler led the Trojans on the hilly 3.1-mile course, placing third out of 314 runners in 19 minutes, 1 second - 19 seconds behind winner Janelle Young of Cedar Cliff. Chambersburg freshmen Sarah Morrison and Brooke Jacobs were fifth (19:10) and 12th (20:04), while Sarah Osterman (50th, 21:07) and Regina Heiser (54th, 21:12) completed the scoring.

"The girls ran another great race," Monheim said. "When I saw our top three all in the top 12, I knew we had the team title sealed up.

"I can't imagine too many teams can match our top three, but if we want to contend for the state title we have to close the gap."

No other area teams or runners qualified for states.

Shayna Weir placed 23rd (21:14) in the girls AA race to lead James Buchanan to a sixth-place finish, while Jeremiah Kimberly was 23rd (17:41) for the ninth-place Rockets in boys AA.

Chambersburg's Ryan St. Clair was the top local finisher among AAA boys, placing 69th (17:55), while the Trojans were the top area team, finishing 13th.
