The REACH Cold Weather Shelter will open its 2003-2004 season Sunday, but the day shelter won't be available until Nov. 3, and then, only on weekdays.

Since 1996, the shelter has provided homeless adults with a shelter of last resort, and information and services for specific needs.

The shelter is open Mondays through Saturdays from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and from 3 p.m. Sundays to 7 a.m. Mondays.

New Light Metropolitan Community Church's Morning Drop-In Program, partnering with the REACH Cold Weather Shelter, will reopen Nov. 3, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at 40 W. Church St., Hagerstown.

The day shelter coordinated by REACH, Community Action Council and Turning Point will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at New Light beginning Nov. 3.

Last winter, City of Hagerstown and Washington County Free Library officials said a day shelter was needed so the homeless would have someplace to go on winter days.

Last winter, some patrons of the homeless shelter spent time during the day in the library.

New Light volunteered to served as the site for a day shelter, starting last February.

While the Cold Weather Shelter has rotated among area churches, REACH (Religious Effort to Assist and Care For the Homeless) plans to move next year into a permanent site next to Christ's Reformed Church on West Franklin Street.

The rotating scheduled begins with a two-week stint at The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown at 20 S. Prospect St., from Oct. 26 to Nov. 9.

Other churches that will host the shelter include:

  • First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Nov. 9 to 23.

  • Christ's Reformed UCC, 130 W. Franklin St., Nov. 23 to 30.

  • Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St., Nov. 30 to Dec. 14.

  • Grace United Methodist Church, Church and Winter Streets, Dec. 14 to 28.

  • Christ's Reformed UCC, 130 W. Franklin St., Dec. 28 to Jan. 4.

  • St. John's Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., Jan. 4 to 18.

  • Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Jan. 18 to Feb. 8.

  • St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Feb. 8 to 22.

  • Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, 15 S. Mulberry St., March 21 to April 4.

Sites and hosts still are needed for Feb. 22 to 29; Feb. 29 to March 7; and March 7 to 21.
