The Humane Society of Washington County invites pooches and pet lovers to "move your paws for a cause."

The seventh annual Canines on the Canal fund-raiser to benefit the humane society will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the C&O Canal National Historical Park's Cushwa Basin in Williamsport.

The event will feature a three-mile walk, food, games, contests, demonstrations and pet-related vendors. The day will begin with a continental breakfast, registration, contest sign-up and starting line activities. After the walk, canines will compete in the mayor of Williamsport canine look-alike, best vocalist, best tail wagger, best beggar and best trick contests. Pups also can play doggie musical chairs and bobbing for hot dogs. The Doggie Deli will have treats for hungry hounds and their two-legged friends.

Prizes will be awarded to contest winners and the individual who collects the most pledges.

Walk participants pay or get sponsorships for at least $15 each to help support homeless animals in Washington County. All pledges and donations are tax-deductible. Shelter animals will be available for people who want to participate but don't have dogs of their own. Those who are interested also can sponsor a shelter dog to participate in the walk.

About 100 pets were registered in last year's event, which raised more than $15,000 for the local humane society, says Tony Lee, event coordinator.
