Goretti sinks highly-rated 'Dogs

Michael Burke had two goals and two assists to lead St. Maria Goretti to a win over Martinsburg, 5-3.

Ben Mijlour had a goal and an assist and Matthew Cotleur and Geb Schramm each scored for Goretti. Kevin Brashears recorded 14 saves for the Gaels (7-8), who have gone 4-1 in the last eight days while playing three top-10 area teams.

Michael Brown had four saves for the Bulldogs (9-2-2).

Hedgesville 2 Mercersburg Academy 2

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Duncan Williams scored one goal for Hedgesville and Eric Rahauser scored once for Mercersburg as the two battled to a tie. They were the only goals reported. Travis Hines had 13 saves for Hedgesville in goal.

Carlisle 5, Waynesboro 4

CARLISLE, Pa. - Carlisle scored the winning goal five minutes into the second overtime to beat Waynesboro.

Nick Kipe had two goals and an assist for the Indians (6-10), who led 3-1 at halftime. Alex Strait and Marco Cullum each had a goal and Zach Tanner had two assists.


Chris Taber made 20 saves for Waynesboro, which was outshot, 29-21.

WILLIAMSPORT - Meggan McGill and Kendal Moss scored unassisted goals for Williamsport in a game called at halftime because of weather conditions. Catie Vancour had four saves for Williamsport (5-6-1, 3-2-1 MVAL).

Brunswick 3, South 0

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Brunswick held South Hagerstown without a shot for the full 80 minutes while building a 2-0 halftime lead en route the MVAL Antietam victory.

The Railroaders (3-6) used a goal by Leah McCallum on an assist by Mary Kate Quinn and a Greta Wengenroth score off Diane Wigfield's pass to notch the lead at half.

Alicia Sanaher scored off Cassie Shortz's pass to cap the scoring.

Brunswick outshot South 15-0 as Rebel goalkeeper Britany Suadrach made 12 stops.


North 3, Brunswick 0

Kierra Nelson had three kills and two blocks, Tracy Hinkle added six aces and Brooke Lord recorded seven aces and three kills for North (6-7) in the Hubs' 25-10, 25-11, 25-8 sweep.

Heritage 3, Shalom 2

Heidi Stamper had 11 kills, Heather Stamper added nine, Whitney Schlimgen tallied 17 digs and Jessica Taylor had five blocks for Heritage (11-5, 9-5) as the Eagles won, 14-25, 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11.

Boonsboro 3, Catoctin 0

BOONSBORO - Jessie Ambrose recorded 22 service points, six aces, four kills, and 11 assists for Boonsboro as the Warriors swept Catoctin, 25-17, 25-7, 25-11. Caitlyn Selby had 10 kills while Kim Snavely added 16 digs for Boonsboro (10-1, 5-0). Kelly Styles had five digs and Heather Hagelin and Katie Campbell each had five assists for Catoctin (5-6).

LOYSBURG, Pa. - Kaylie Mellott had 13 kills, Loni Layton added seven kills and 11 service points and Candace Bard tallied seven kills and 13 service points for Southern Fulton (14-2) in the Indians' 25-11, 25-6, 25-18 sweep.

STEELTON, Pa. - Ashley Helfrick had 10 digs and nine kills, Jess Stough recorded 15 assists and Tiffany Hunsberger added 14 service points and 10 aces in James Buchanan's (16-1) 25-2, 25-9, 25-4 victory.

Cumberland Valley 3 Broadfording 1

Tina Conner had 10 aces and 12 kills for Broadfording Christian Academy in a 25-14, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22 loss to Cumberland Valley. Becca Conner had 15 service points and 13 assists and Cindel Young added 10 kills and one block for the Lions (14-4, 11-2).

South 3, Clear Spring 0

Keli Dofflemyer led South with 14 assists and five service points as it defeated Clear Spring, 25-18, 25-11, 25-11. Angie Chang and Lindsay Steiner each added 10 service points for South (8-3, 2-1).

Megan Kesecker led Hedgesville to a 25-17, 25-15, 25-13 win over Goretti with six kills, 12 aces and four digs. Kara Barnes had five kills and three digs for Hedgesville (16-7-5, 11-3) and Miranda Reed added six kills, three aces and seven digs.

Middletown 3 South Carroll 1

Kristin Young had 23 assists and five aces while Jill Martin and Allie Jarkey had seven and nine kills respectively for Middletown (8-2, 1-1) in its 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16 win over South Carroll.

McConnellsburg 3 Hyndman 0

HYNDMAN, Pa. - Allison Paruch had 15 service points and Lindsay Lininger had 15 kills as McConnellsburg swept Hyndman, 25-11, 25-9, 25-15.

Jade Anthony had 13 points, Heidi Swope had 24 kill assists and Kara Carmack had seven kills for the Spartans (17-1).

JV: McConnellsburg, 2-0.


Howard 3, HCC 2

Hagerstown Community College scored the first two goals of the game, but couldn't hold off a Howard rally as the Hawks lost in double overtime. Ishmael Sunday and Filip Simic had goals and Sean Beyard and Joel Forsyth had assists for the Hawks (4-6-1), who were outshot, 20-6. HCC goalkeeper Sean Hunt had 10 saves.


Hole-in-one posted

Paul Keplinger recorded his second career hole-in-one when he aced the 155-yard 14th hole at Beaver Creek Country Club using a five iron. The shot was witnessed by Nancy Keplinger, Sam Wade, Don Baker and Leon Stewart.
