HOUSTON - Shell Oil Co. said Tuesday that a body believed to be that of former Washington County resident Lloyd L. Beard Jr. was found Tuesday morning, four days after a helicopter in which he was a passenger crashed in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell spokeswoman Helen K. Bow said the body was transported to Galveston, Texas, for positive identification, which would come from the Galveston County coroner.

Beard, 57, of Hallsville, Texas, and co-worker Terry Higginbotham, 32, of Conroe, Texas, were passengers in a helicopter en route to the Stingray compressor station at West Cameron Block 509. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by Shell Aviation and the National Transportation Safety Board, Bow said.

Beard was a graduate of Clear Spring High School and Hagerstown Junior College, and worked for Mack Trucks in Hagerstown and for Fleetwood Travel Trailers in Hancock before relocating to Texas.
