Youth, 16, burned in campfire accident

October 12, 2003

A 16-year-old Washington County resident was in critical condition Saturday night after receiving third-degree burns while attempting to light a campfire, the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office said.

Dustin Wayne Smith was attempting to light a campfire using gasoline in the 17500 block of Spielman Road when vapors from the gas ignited, the office said in a news release.

Smith was flown to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, the news release said.

"Neighbors heard what was described as an 'explosion' as the vapors ignited and looked out to see the youth running from the campfire," the news release said. "They were successful in extinguishing the flames on his clothing by covering him with a blanket and rolling him on the lawn."

The news release included a reminder for people to be careful with outdoor fires.
