Dog that bit local woman is euthanized, officials say

A dog that bit a Hagerstown woman Sunday afternoon in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue was euthanized Tuesday, according to the Washington County Humane Society.

Paul Miller, Humane Society executive director, said the dog's remains will be sent to be tested by a state health agency.

Robin Pelley, 42, of 925 Maryland Ave., was walking a Jack Russell terrier when a pit bull charged, Hagerstown Police Lt. Mike King said Tuesday.

Pelley, who was bitten on her left hand, was to undergo surgery Wednesday. She said her terrier also was treated for wounds received in the attack.


The owners, who live in the 900 block of Maryland Avenue, released the dog to the Humane Society earlier this week, Miller said.

Overturned lumber truck closes Interstate 70 ramp

The ramp from eastbound Interstate 70 to northbound Interstate 81 near Hagers-town was closed Wednesday morning to clear an accident after a tractor-trailer overturned, Maryland State Police said.

The truck carrying lumber overturned on the ramp at about 5:23 a.m., Detective Sgt. Mike Hegedus said. There were no other vehicles involved in the accident and no one was injured.

Backhoe reported stolen from area construction site

A $40,000 backhoe was reported stolen Tuesday afternoon from a construction site on Corello Drive north of Hagers-town, Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Carl Witmer said.

The piece of equipment is a yellow 2000 Komatsu backhoe owned by Woodsboro, Md.-based Richard B. Stine Inc. construction company. It has a front loader and a rear digging claw, Witmer said.

The large construction item was seen last at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Police have no leads in the theft, Witmer said.

There are several identifying features of the backhoe. Two side windows and a rear window had been removed by the owner. Also, on the digging claw is the company identifying mark "L-40."

The serial number F10027 also is stamped in several places on the backhoe, Witmer said.

Swimming pool slashed, Pa. license plates stolen

The Washington County Sheriff's Department received the following crime reports Tuesday:

  • An above-ground swimming pool was reported damaged when someone apparently slashed it with a sharp object. The damage was estimated at $500.

  • A set of Pennsylvania license plates were taken from a vehicle parked at 15207 National Pike. The tag number is DZB5056.

  • A Maryland front license plate was stolen off a vehicle at Hagerstown Community College, 11400 Robinwood Drive. The tag number is LKG705.

Md. men face charges after run-in with police officer

FREDERICK, Md. - Two Gaithersburg, Md., men face charges in connection with an incident Saturday when one of the men allegedly tried to run over a police officer, Frederick City Police said.

Edward Joseph Guidry, 26, of 18632 Chickade Lane, Gaithersburg, is charged with first- and second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property, fleeing and eluding a police officer, reckless driving and failing to obey a traffic control device.

Jon Patrick Warren, 27, of the same address, is charged with marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession.

Police said that Officer Ranae Armstrong was on foot patrol near the South Court Street parking deck when someone told her a driver had struck an exit barrier in the parking garage.

Armstrong approached the driver of the sport utility vehicle and ordered him to stop. When she stepped in front of the vehicle, the driver, Guidry, allegedly tried to strike her with the vehicle, police said.

Armstrong was able to get out of the way, but Guidry allegedly drove out of the parking garage and then parked in the nearby Frederick Police Department parking lot.

Guidry and Warren left the vehicle, but were stopped by police. Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found marijuana and a smoking device.

Both men posted bond Saturday, a Frederick County Adult Detention Center official said.

Man faces rape charges

FREDERICK, Md. - A Gaithersburg, Md., man was charged Wednesday morning with rape and sex offense charges in connection with alleged contact the man had with a 13-year-old girl Monday, Frederick City Police said.

A. Jacklin Orellana, 23, of Welbeck Court, Gaithersburg, is charged with second-degree rape; second-, third- and fourth-degree sex offense; second-degree assault; and unnatural and perverted sex practice.

Police said Orellana allegedly entered the girl's family home, intimidated the girl and performed various sex acts.

Orellana was being held on a $95,000 bond Wednesday at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.

Mountain area searched

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. - Police and firefighters searched an area of Quincy Township Tuesday evening after receiving a report that someone could be heard calling for help.

Police said the woods along Kettle Spring Road was searched after the 5:30 p.m. call, but no one needing help was found. Several troopers as well as firefighters from the Mont Alto, Pa., and South Mountain fire companies took part in the search. A state police helicopter also was used.

Pa. man charged with assault

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Pennsylvania State Police charged a St. Thomas man with simple assault after a domestic dispute Monday night.

Police said Gregory Keith Higgins, 46, of 7390 Lincoln Way West, was charged in connection with a 9:59 p.m. incident involving Debra Jean Higgins, 44.
