WHEELING, W.Va. - Martinsburg's Trevor Hedges fired a one-under par 71 on Tuesday in the West Virginia Class AAA State Golf Tournament but it wasn't enough for the Bulldogs to overhaul John Marshall for the team title.

Martinsburg ended the two-day tournament with a 478 team total, 13 strokes behind John Marshall, which was led by medalist Trent Schambach's two-round total of 150.

Hedges' round was the best of the tournament and came on the heels of an opening-round 82 for a third place 153 total.

Teammate Sam Harrison had a 79-77-156.


Martinsburg 7, Goretti 1

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ashley Austerman had a hat trick and Natalie Minnich added two goals as Martinsburg strolled past St. Maria Goretti. Laurel Bobo and Kati Hoeck also scored goals for the Bulldogs.


Gaby Yakupchine scored on an assist from Emily Favret for Goretti's only goal. Kathleen Costello had 10 saves in the loss.


Heritage 2, Broadfording 1

Travis Hendershot scored unassisted and Steven Bartholow scored on a corner kick from Mike Scotti as Heritage edged Broadfording. The Eagles (5-9) scored both goals in the second half.

Cumberland Valley 5 Waynesboro 1

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Nick Kipe scored on an assist from James Derrick, but Waynesboro was routed by Cumberland Valley. Ben Cook had five first half saves and Chris Tabor recorded eight saves, allowing just one goal, in the second half for the Indians (5-8).

Grace Academy 1 Calvary Christian 0

Grace Academy upped its record to 10-2 on the strength of A.J. Serafini's goal. Jack Sharkey posted seven saves for Grace, which improved to 8-2 in the MDCC.

Thomas Johnson 3 Middletown 0

FREDERICK, Md. - Brandon Bane had two goals and Mike Langford scored the other for Thomas Johnson, while keeper Gladimir Elysee registered the shutout.

The Patriots outshot the Knights (5-3-1), 5-2.


James Buchanan 3 Fairfield 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Jess Stough had 27 digs and four aces to lead James Buchanan in a sweep of Fairfield, 25-23, 25-7, 25-14. Lindsay Crider had nine service points and 22 assists, while Ashley Helfrick added 13 kills and Karina Hunsberger had four blocks for the Rockets (13-1).

McConnellsburg 3 Everett 0

EVERETT, Pa. - Jade Anthony and Kara Carmack each had 11 kills, while Lindsay Lininger added nine to lead McConnellsburg past Everett, 25-20, 25-22, 25-13. Heidi Swope had 11 service points and 29 kill assists and Emile Ott had 10 service points for the Spartans (14-1).

Southern Fulton 3 Fannett-Metal 0

FANNETTSBURG, Pa. - Kaylie Mellott had 12 kills, nine service points and six blocks to lead Southern Fulton past Fannett-Metal, 25-14, 25-12, 25-13. Loni Layton had 10 kills and seven digs and Jesse Wigfield had 11 service points for the Indians (12-2).

Katie Kendall had 21 service points and seven aces as Grace Academy swept Calvary Christian Academy, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21. Megan Cox had seven kills and Kristin Serafini had 10 assists for the Knights (4-7).

Heather Stamper had nine kills and Heidi Stamper had 15 digs, but Heritage Academy (9-5, 7-5) fell to Broadfording Christian Academy in five games, 21-25, 25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 15-13.

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - Kristin Young had 12 assists as Middletown fell to Francis Scott Key, 25-27, 24-26, 21-25. Allison Jarkey four kills and three aces and Erin Burtner had three kills for the Knights (6-2).

Greencastle 3 Shippensburg 1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - After an opening loss, 25-13, Greencastle came back to defeat Shippensburg, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23. Mandi Mentzer had 20 digs for Greencastle while Jessica Ritchey had 11 points, seven aces and seven kills. Maxie George added 12 hits and six hills for the winners.

Hedgesville 3 Musselman 0

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Megan Grant had 10 kills 13 digs and five blocks to lead Hedgesville over Musselman, 25-11, 25-19, 25-17.

Ryan Mills added six kills and six digs.


Alderson-Broaddus 1 Shepherd 0

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - Hans Schubert scored on an assist from John Whitaker as Alderson-Broaddus edged Shepherd College.

Robert Pence recorded five saves for Shepherd (5-6-2, 0-2-1).

HCC 1, Anne Arundel 1

ARNOLD, Md. - Filip Simic scored unassisted in the first half for Hagerstown Community College, but Anne Arundel knotted the score with a second half goal.

The Hawks outshot Anne Arundel, 15-14. Sean Hunt had 10 saves for HCC (4-4-1).


Shepherd 7 Southern Virginia 2

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - Erin Wilkinson scored three goals and assisted on another as Shepherd routed Southern Virginia.

Ashley Gossert, Lauren Cepko, Maria Brown, and Shannon Leighty also scored for the Rams (4-7). Theresa Ryan and Kyla Heimburger each had two assists, while Erin Kinnear added one in the victory.


Amateur wins Open title

IJAMSVILLE, Md. - Amateur Jessica Lewis won the 5th annual Maryland Women's Open Tuesday with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

Lewis, of Bethesda and the Columbia Country Club, had a two-day 77-76-153 total and tied with Mallory Crosland of Bethesda and Chevy Chase Country Club and professional C.J. Reeves of Bedford, N.Y.

Lewis is the third amateur to win the championship.
