John I. Kleppinger Jr.


John I. Kleppinger Jr., 85, of 13822 Eden Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 12, 1918, in Reading, Pa., he was the son of the late John I. Kleppinger Sr. and Mary Harper Zahn Kleppinger.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Janet M. Baumgardner Kleppinger, in 1986. They were married in December 1937.

He was a 1936 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

He was employed for 40 years as a manufacturing engineer by Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown. He retired in 1980.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Hagerstown, the church council, a past recording secretary, past president of the Laymen's Group, past president of Friendly Bible Class, an usher and a Sunday School teacher.

He is survived by one half sister, Velma Scott of Hagerstown; one half brother, James Wade of Hagerstown; nieces; nephews; and his longtime friend, Dolly Trumpower of Hagerstown.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. Pastor Roger K. Myers will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.




Thomas W. Truax


McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Thomas Wilson Truax, 82, of Fulton County Medical Center Extended Care Unit, and formerly of 832 Lincoln Way East, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Fulton County Medical Center.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in McConnellsburg, he was the son of the late Howard W. and M. Alice Keefer Truax.

He was an industrial engineer for 42 years at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of McConnellsburg United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Mount Zion Masonic Lodge 774 of McConnellsburg; Harrisburg Consistery; Altoona Shriner's Club; VFW Post 655 and American Legion Post 561, both of McConnellsburg; among others.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Clark Truax, whom he married June 15, 1942; three daughters, Judith T. Duke of Northumberland, Pa., Joy T. Minnier of McConnellsburg and Jody T. Keefer of Mercersburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia C. Crider.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home in McConnellsburg. The Rev. Roger Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg, with military honors by Fulton Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 2 p.m. Visitation also will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.




Margaret S. Lucas


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Margaret Franz Simon Lucas, 79, of 11809 Orchard Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at Harrisburg General Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Margaret Zimmerman Franz.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert G. Simon, in 1993. They were married in 1946.

She was a 1942 graduate of Annunciation High School in Pittsburgh.

From 1965 to 1971, she worked as an administrative secretary at Washington Middle School in Meriden, Conn.

She was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

She was a member of a local bridge club in Waynesboro; BPOE Elks Lodge 731 Auxiliary of Waynesboro; Waynesboro Country Club; Waynesboro Garden Club; and volunteered for the Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, William J. Lucas, whom she married Dec. 3, 1994; two daughters, Sue Obremski of Manassas, Va., and Diane Solnik of Wallingford, Conn.; one son, Stephen G. Simon of Waterford, Conn.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Catherine Pellegrini of Columbus, Ohio, and Eileen Knorr of Oakmont, Pa.; two stepsons, Lawrence A. Lucas of Pittsburgh and William D. Lucas of Carrick, Pa.; 14 stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Norbert Franz; and one stepson, Michael Lucas.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The Rev. Michael Messaro will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a prayer service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

Martha I. Shives


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Martha I. Helfrick Minnich Shives, 77, of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of 6400 Rock Hill Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at the nursing home.

Born April 4, 1926, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Annie R. Myers Helfrick.

She was preceded in death by her second husband, Melvin Shives, in 1981. They were married in 1977.

She attended Greencastle schools.
