Frank E. Semler Sr.


SMITHSBURG - Frank E. Semler Sr., 90, of Comanche Drive, who died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Warrenfeltz Semler, in 2002, and by one daughter, Beverly Bowers.




John A. Heard Jr.


John Albert Heard Jr., 58, of 2221 Beverly Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 11, 1945, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of John Albert Heard of Chesapeake, Va., and the late Eleanor Ruth Castelow Heard.

He was employed as an optician by Bowers and Snyder in Baltimore.

He was a member of Maranatha Brethren Church, and sang on the choir.

He was a member of the Maryland Opticians Association.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Sara Jane Heard; one daughter, Cheryl J. Leisinger of Smithsburg; one son, John A. Heard III of Hagerstown; two sisters, Sherrie Cobb of Moyock, N.C. and Nancy Wilson of Chesapeake; and three grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home in Hagerstown. The Rev. Jay M. Fretz will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John R. Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.




Edna G. Messner


BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Edna Gladys Messner, 53, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at War Memorial Hospital.

Born July 30, 1950, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Mary Blair Clever Gearhart of Greencastle, Pa. and the late Harry Oscar Clever.

She was a certified nursing assistant at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Berkeley Springs.

She was a member of Junior Order United American Mechanics Council 117.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William F. Messner; two daughters, Mary Messner of Martinsburg, W.Va. and Tammy McCusker of Hancock; two sons, Kenny Messner of Berkeley Springs and Michael Messner of Williamsport; five stepdaughters, Barbara Lite of Hagerstown, Darlene Stoner of Greencastle, Kay Miller of Berkeley Springs, Libby Woods of Richmond, Va., and Peggy Mullen of Martinsburg; one stepson, Bill Messner of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Ruth Wallech and Betty Sutak, both of Hagerstown; one half sister, Helen Carbaugh of Greencastle; three brothers, Earl Clever and Nelson Clever, both of Greencastle, and Billy Clever of Hagerstown; one half brother, Grover Clever of Williamsport; nieces; nephews; and 12 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two stepchildren, Kathy Steiner and Steven Messner; and one brother, Preston Clever.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Berkeley Springs. Clarence McDowell will officiate. Burial will be in Duckwall Church of Christ Cemetery.

Visitation will be today and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. There will be a memorial service today at 7:30 p.m. by Jr. O.U.A.M. at the funeral home.

Debora M. Etter


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Debora Mae Etter, 56, of 261 E. Catherine St., Apt. 2, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at her home.

Born Jan. 1, 1947, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Ivan M. and Constance Bloom Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. Etter, in 1989.

She had been employed by OSI in Chambersburg.

She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Chambersburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Debora M. Etter of Chambersburg; and two cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home in Chambersburg. The Rev. Garry L. Kipe will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Bertha V. Lowman


Bertha V. "Ga" Guessford Lowman, 85, of 1414 W. Church St., Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1918, in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Nellie V. Barncord Grove.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul L. Guessford, in 1959; and by her second husband, Clarence J. Lowman, in 1985.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda V. Zeger of Hagerstown; three sons, Robert L. Guessford Sr. of Purcell, Okla., Larry W. Guessford of York, Pa., and Donald E. Guessford of Hagerstown; two sisters, Estella Whitehead of Enid, Okla. and Eva Holland of Williamsport; one brother, Earl Grove of Fairplay; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra K. Guessford; one son, Charles L. Guessford; two sisters, Ethel Spidle and Alice Davis; and one brother, Oscar Grove.
