CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A Jefferson County grand jury on Thursday indicted a Ranson, W.Va., woman on an embezzlement charge in connection with $24,000 that turned up missing last year from the Towne House Motor Lodge on East Washington Street, according to Jefferson County Circuit Court records.

Barbara Engle, 40, of P.O. Box 135, worked as the manager of the business, court records said.

In June 2002, Towne House Motor Lodge officials noticed that deposits totaling more than $24,000 had not been taken to the bank and were missing, court records said.

During an interview with Charles Town Police, Engle told them that the money was stolen from her car at a flea market, court records said. After she was questioned further, Engle admitted to a gambling problem and said she had been embezzling money from the Town House Lodge since March 2002, court records allege.
