Two-vehicle accident kills Texas woman

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - A Texas woman died from injuries she sustained Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on Mont Alto Road in Guilford Township, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said.

Roberta Schwind, 66, of Borger, Texas, was a passenger in a 2000 Geo Tracker traveling south in the 1900 block of Mont Alto Road at 4:08 p.m. when the vehicle collided with a 1989 Chevrolet conversion van, state police said.

Schwind was pronounced dead at Chambersburg Hospital, police said.

The accident occurred about a quarter-mile north of Duffield Road intersection where the road goes into a blind curve on a hill.

The driver of the Geo, Mary Pearl, 32, of Waynesboro, Pa., lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the curve on the wet road, police said.

The Geo turned counterclockwise and the passenger side of the vehicle struck the Chevrolet van driven by Valissa Martin, 33, of Orrtanna, Pa., police said.

After impact, the Geo continued to spin and came to a rest facing west in the southbound lane, police said.

Pearl and Martin were taken to Chambersburg Hospital for treatment of injuries. A 12-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl in Martin's van also were transported to the hospital. No information on their conditions was available at presstime.

Two baby strollers were on the side of the road next to the van, which had heavy damage to the front driver's side. The van was pushed off the west side of the road, while the SUV still partially blocked the southbound lane.

Mont Alto Road was closed north of Duffield Road while police investigated the accident.
