Girl bitten by pit bull treated and released

September 14, 2003

A 9-year-old girl who was bitten on the face by a pit bull Friday night in her mother's home at 42 East Franklin St. in Hagerstown was treated at Washington County Hospital and released, her father said Saturday.

Terry Messersmith of Ritchey Road, Cascade, said his daughter, whose name was not released by authorities, needed about seven stitches to close wounds around her eye. He said his daughter lives with him and was visiting her mother in Hagerstown when the attack occurred around 9:30 p.m.

The girl's mother owned two pit bulls in the apartment, 6-month-old littermates, police said. One was male, the other female.

Police said a woman visiting in the apartment pulled the male dog off the girl and dragged him to the kitchen where his littermate was. The male attacked the female and inflicted such serious wounds she later died, Messersmith said.

The male dog was scheduled to be put down, police said.
