September 08, 2003

Winter Street Elementary reading teacher Pamela Michael has been named one of eight state finalists in the Maryland Teacher of the Year program.

Other state finalists include: Elaine Tubb, Charles County Public Schools; Nancy Koza, Howard County Public Schools; Barbara Jeweler, Montgomery County Public Schools; George Radcliffe Jr., Queen Anne's County Public Schools; Karen Linaman, Somerset County Public Schools; Aaron Deal, Wicomico County Public Schools; and Carvel LaCurts, Worcester County Public Schools.

All finalists will participate in interviews on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Maryland State Department of Education in Baltimore, as part of the judging process.

Teachers representing each of the 24 school systems will be honored at the 13th Annual Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala on Oct. 10 at Martin's West in Baltimore, when one of the finalists will be honored as the Maryland State Teacher of the Year. That award winner will receive the title to a new car, $5,000 cash and an invitation to a White House ceremony, where President George W. Bush will express his congratulations.

A wide-ranging set of criteria is considered by a committee of educators, state and local elected board members, and representatives from the private sector.

The finalists were judged on recommendations from colleagues, teaching philosophy, knowledge of general education issues and other criteria.

Judges will interview each finalist before the Teacher of the Year is selected.

The day after the awards dinner, State School Superintendent Nancy Grasmick will convene a forum on education topics, involving the Teacher of the Year representatives from each school system.
