August 28, 2003

The Hagerstown Suns scored the game's first eight runs - started by A.J. LaBarbera's first home run of the season - and defeated the Charleston (W.Va.) AlleyCats 8-4 Wednesday to stay alive in the race for the South Atlantic League Northern Division Wild Card.

Merkin Valdez was sharp for the Suns, whiffing seven AlleyCats through six innings and holding them to only two hits.

With one out in the fourth inning, Freddie Lewis hit an infield single and LaBarbera homered over the left field fence to give the Suns a 2-0 lead. Later, Brian Buscher's double to left drove in Kevin Alexander, and Randy Walter's flyout to center scored Kevin Kelly for a 4-0 lead.

The Suns scored two insurance runs in the sixth when Brian Munhall walked and Jake Wald doubled to right. With two outs, Kevin Alexander singled to left to score two and put the Suns up, 6-0.
