'Musical Artists of Note' exhibit opens this Friday

August 26, 2003

Conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein (right) is one of the subjects in an exhibition of candid photographs of famous musicians, conductors and performers by Vernon D. Kirkpatrick. The exhibition runs from Friday, Aug. 29, through Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown.

An oboist in the National Symphony Orchestra for 45 years, Kirkpatrick photographed conductors and soloists during rehearsals and performances. Many of the photographs were autographed the day of the performance. Other subjects include Sid Caesar, Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky, Danish pianist and entertainer Victor Borge, actor Gregory Peck, guitarist John Denver, composer Henry Mancini and tenor Placido Domingo.

Another musician included in the exhibition is Itzhak Perlman, whose photograph was taken in 1984 while Perlman was performing at the Kennedy Center.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. For information, call 301-739-5727.
