Brunswick wins state championship

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Doug Stottlemyer went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and scored the winning run on a passed ball in the seventh inning, as the Brunswick Orioles topped the Tri-State Titans of Cumberland, Md., 7-4 to capture the 2003 Maryland State Semi-Pro Baseball title Saturday night at Brunswick High School.

After Stottlemyer's run made it 5-4, the Orioles added two more on consecutive singles from John Mangold, Roger Dawson and Wayne Toms. Scott Frye pitched four innings of shutout relief for the win.

Toms finished with three hits, while Dawson and Jason Mobley each had two.

Brunswick advanced to the final with a 10-2 semifinal win over Tri-County Cambridge.

John Sechler pitched a complete-game five-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Orioles, while Brad Lowe went 3-for-6 with a two-run homer, Kevin Damiano was 3-for-4 with two doubles, Frye and Steve Goode each had three hits, Dawson and Mangold each had two hits and Stottlemyer hit a solo homer.

Brunswick (38-9), the Blue Ridge Adult League champs, will be back in action Labor Day weekend at the Grover Frye Tournament.
