William F. Burger


JEFFERSON, Md. - William Franklin Burger, 80, of 5002A Burkittsville Road, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Vindobona Nursing Home in Braddock Heights, Md.

Born June 6, 1923, in Keedysville, he was the son of the late William F. and Mary Danner Burger.

He was a retired truck driver with Meadows Van and Storage in Frederick, Md.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Burkittsville, Md.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1582 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136, both of Brunswick, Md.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Marie Burger; three stepdaughters, Debra Dorsey of Littleton, Colo., and Lori Spitler and Kristan Morris, both of Jefferson, Md.; and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary V. Thompson.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, Brunswick. Pastor Kimberly Wetzel will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Burkittsville.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 9 a.m.

August A. Hutzler-Gladden


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - August Angel Star Hutzler-Gladden, infant daughter of Timothy Allen Gladden and Dawnelle Renee Hutzler, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Marino Keith Britner; maternal grandparents Connie Wise and Donald Hutzler of Inwood, W.Va.; maternal great-grandmothers Jeanie Hutzler of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Katie Lane of Martinsburg; paternal great-grandparents, Helen Hummer and Vernon Gladden of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; two aunts; an uncle; and two cousins.

She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Timothy R. Gladden and Sarah A. Baucher and maternal great-grandparents Elsie and Edward Robinson and Kenneth Hutzler.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.




Lawrence T. Bender


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Lawrence "Larry" Thomas Bender, 76, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003.

Born Aug. 20, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Samuel B. Bender and Anna Boarman Bender Chappell.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Aldena Siler Bender; two daughters, Deborah Anderson of Denver and Rebecca Levorson of Martinsburg; two sisters, Mildred Anderson and Joann Huyett, both of Inwood, W.Va.; two brothers, Harold Bender of Maryland and James Bender of Martinsburg; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles H. Bender and Samuel O. Bender, and his stepfather, Carlton Chappell.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Mason Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Oalene E. Murphy


MARLOWE, W.Va. - Oalene Estella Murphy, 65, of Marlowe, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, the result of an automobile accident.

Born Nov. 27, 1937, in Marlowe, she was the daughter of the late Robert Eli and JoAnna M. Cook Jordan.

She was a member of Marlowe Assembly of God.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert Wagner Murphy; a son, Herbert E. Murphy of Marlowe; five daughters, JoAnna Judy, Betty Mussolino, Pamela Turpin, Donna Rollins and Linda Kelley, all of Marlowe; a stepdaughter, Rene; a stepson, Paul Murphy of Virginia; a sister, Ruby Householder; a brother, Walter Whorten; five half sisters, Judy, Pam, Jackie, LaLonie, and Dixie; six half brothers, Teddy Jordan, Pat Jordan, Randy Jordan, Toby Jordan, Robert Jordan and Eddie Jordan; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by foster parents Blanche and Layman Whorten; a sister, Cathy; and a half brother, Leroy.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Temple Church in Williamsport. The Rev. Robert Robinson will officiate, assisted by Walter Whorten. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.




Emma H. Blackwell


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Emma Hosby Blackwell, 97, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.

Born June 29, 1906, in Markham, Va., she was the daughter of the late Phaddeus and Emily Diggs Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Hosby, in 1978.

She was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Charles Town, W.Va.
