Karim Ali Ward, 27, charged with murder in the shooting death of a New Jersey man last December, has been indicted by a Washington County grand jury on that and other charges.

In the indictment handed up last week, Ward is charged with one count each of first- and second-degree murder and assault and weapons charges.

Ward also was indicted on six firearms charges, including two counts of possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony, and a city firearms ordinance violation.

Ward was convicted in 1999 on a charge of conspiracy to distribute drugs, Washington County State's Attorney M. Kenneth Long said Thursday.

The indictment, unsealed Tuesday, replaces the charges filed against Ward by Hagerstown City Police shortly after the Dec. 14, 2002, shooting death of Carl Anthony Wallace, 28, of Asbury Park, N.J., on North Jonathan Street.

Ward's case automatically was forwarded to Washington County Circuit Court this week. A trial date has not been scheduled.

Ward had been charged in warrants with the shooting but was not apprehended until New York City police took him into custody on July 8.

Ward, whose last known address was 1725 Springhouse Court, Frederick, Md., was being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center.
