Edith I. Ruppenthal


BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Edith Iona Ruppenthal, 86, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs.

Born June 9, 1917, in Berkeley Springs, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Mae Aulabaugh McCoy.

She attended public schools in Morgan County, W.Va.

She worked seasonally at the Aulabaugh and Carl Johnson canning factories.

She was a member of Hancock Assembly of God.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ercel B. Ruppenthal Jr.; one daughter, Patricia J. McKee of Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Ercel B. Ruppenthal III of Inwood, W.Va., and Michael L. Ruppenthal of Smithsburg; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen D. Ruppenthal; nine sisters, Ardella Spielman, Goldie Graham, Mamie Unger, Emma Michael, Beulah Michael, Virgie DeHaven and three infant sisters; and three brothers, Belford McCoy, Pete McCoy and an infant brother.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home in Berkeley Springs. Pastor Robert Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Snyders Bible Church Cemetery in Morgan County.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.




Catherine I. Burnett


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Catherine Irene Burnett, 86, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at City Hospital.

Born Feb. 14, 1917, in Toms Brook, Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Ada Shank Bauserman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lindsey Burnett.

She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, William Burnett of Martinsburg; one sister, Isabelle Lawhorn of Maurertown, Va.; one brother, Fred Bauserman of Maurertown; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Arlene Alger


HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Arlene Alger, 72, of Harpers Ferry, and formerly of Brunswick, Md., died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 28, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Leon and Esther Rothenberg Toister.

She was a retired supervisor of commercial accounts at Fort Detrick in Frederick.

She attended Brunswick Assembly of God Church.

She was a member of Brunswick Chapter 97 OES, and Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136, Brunswick.

She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Bobby Alger; three daughters, Vicki Morgan of Dallas, Laine Beachley of Harpers Ferry, and Diane Alger of Knoxville; three sons, Gary Null of Dallas, Jeff Null and Michael Null, both of Brunswick; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Null; and one brother, Albert Toister.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Brownsville (Md.) Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Ralph Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Myrtle W. Moss


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Myrtle Whitacre Moss, 100, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at Heartland of Martinsburg.

Born Sept. 15, 1902, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Benton and Mae Slonaker Whitacre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Moss.

She and her late husband had a real estate business in Washington, D.C., for 48 years.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two nieces, Evelyn McGuire of Carlisle, Pa., and Clara Brandt of York Springs, Pa.; and two nephews, Harley Whitacre of Rome, Ga., and Joseph Whitacre of York Springs.

Services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.




Earl K. Hedges


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Earl K. Hedges, 92, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at Heartland of Martinsburg.

Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Hunter and Lulu V. Murphy Hedges.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Eunice Dove Hedges.

He retired from Fairchild Aircraft.

He was a member of Tomahawk Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by one son, Gary W. Hedges of Hedgesville; one sister, Yvonne Evans of Front Royal, Va.; two grandchildren, Tammy S. Palmer and Brian K. Hedges, both of Hedgesville; and two great-grandchildren.
