Robbery at Martinsburg hotel follows pattern

August 16, 2003

A Martinsburg hotel was the site of another robbery early Friday morning, with a mode of operation similar to that of two robberies in the previous two days.

During the most recent robbery, two men walked into Comfort Suites on W.Va. 9 and asked about renting a room. When a clerk told them no rooms were available, one man asked for change for a dollar bill.

After the clerk opened the register, the man slid onto the counter and grabbed cash. Telling the clerk that he had a gun, the other man warned the clerk not to move and then grabbed additional cash from the register, according to police reports.

Witnesses reported seeing a possible getaway car which had a West Virginia license plate that police determined had been stolen from a car parked at the nearby IRS facility. Police believe the men are driving a large white van.

One man was described as white, in his early 40s, with glasses, a light mustache and close-cropped hair. The other man was described as black, with "corn rows" in his hair.

The same men are believed to have robbed the West King Street ROCs gas station early Thursday morning and the Econo Lodge in Spring Mills early Wednesday morning. In both of those incidents a man asked for change before robbing the business.

None of the clerks was hurt.
