Hospital meeting planned next week

Washington County Health System officials will hold a public meeting this month to discuss its proposed new hospital off Robinwood Drive.

The 90-minute meeting is scheduled Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. in Suite 142 of Robinwood Medical Center.

Washington County Health System President and CEO James P. Hamill will present a computerized rendition of the new hospital.

Participants will be able to ask questions and make comments.

After studying whether to renovate the hospital, the health system board in November 2001 proposed moving the hospital. A site selection committee reviewed 13 potential sites and in November 2002 recommended a site on Robinwood Drive next to the medical center.

Hagerstown city officials oppose the move because it would remove jobs and leave empty space downtown. The city has asked the Maryland Health Care Commission to deny the hospital's request for a certificate of need for the move.

The hospital estimates construction costs for a new hospital to be $164.3 million.

Hamill has argued that it will be less expensive over time to maintain a smaller, energy-efficient replacement hospital building. Replacement also allows expansion of patient rooms to accommodate critical monitoring equipment and in-room medical treatment, he has said.

Renovating the hospital would have been disruptive to patients, their families and the staff, he has said.

Robinwood Medical Center is at 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown. Use the silver or blue parking lots and entrances to attend the meeting.
