Navy Seaman Recruit Charles E. House, son of Patty A. House of Chambersburg, Pa., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

House is a 2003 graduate of Chambersburg High School.




Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew K. Rogers, son of Ann M. and Francis J. Rogers of Sharpsburg, recently departed for a Law Enforcement and Homeland Security Patrol aboard U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Diligence, homeported in Wilmington, N.C.

Rogers is a 1993 graduate of Boonsboro High School, and joined the Coast Guard in August 1994.




Coast Guard Cadet Lukas A. Spurrier, son of Kelly M. and Mark A. Spurrier of Frederick, Md., recently enrolled as a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.

Spurrier is a 2003 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.




Coast Guard Cadet Jesse C. Keyser, son of Laurie F. and Frank W. Keyser of Martinsburg, W.Va., recently enrolled as a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.

Keyser is a 2003 graduate of Martinsburg High School.




Navy Seaman Bruce D. Shanton Jr., son of Consuelo L. and Bruce D. Shanton of Charles Town, W.Va., recently made a port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Shanton is a 2001 graduate of Jefferson High School, Charles Town, and joined the Navy in September 2001.




Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Allen Ford III, recently made a port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

Ford is a 1999 graduate of Jefferson High School, Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.




Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Timothy W. Steele, recently made a port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit is currently aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

Steele is a 2001 graduate of Linganore High School, Mount Airy, Md.




Marine Corps Lance Cpl. David P. Piper, son of Julie M. and David A. Piper of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., recently made a port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit is currently aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

Piper is a 2001 graduate of Clarke County High School of Berryville, Va. and joined the Marine Corps in June 2001.




Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Daniel John, son of Lorrie Smith of Frederick, Md., recently made a port visit to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. The unit is currently aboard the USS Iwo Jima.

John is a 1992 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School and joined the Marine Corps in November 1999.




Army Reserve Lt. Col. Lani McKinney has returned to the U.S. from Afghanistan, where the soldier had been deployed to support the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom.

McKinney is a chief nurse assigned tot he 48th Combat Support Hospital, Fort George G. Mead, Laurel, Md. She has 26 years of military service.

She is the sister of Tammie Voytko of Hagerstown, and Carol Keppler of South Bend, Ind.

McKinney is a 1969 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School, Hagerstown, and received an associate degree in 1978 from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.




Air Force Staff Sgt. Brian M. Barnhart, son of Mark and Diana Barnhart of Hagerstown, and husband of Christine Pieri Barnhart of Ellicott City, had deployed to Oman on the Arabian Peninsula.

Barnhart is a reservist with the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard, where he is a C-130 mechanic.

Barnhart is a 1996 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and has served in the military for eight years.




Senior Airman Geoffrey Andrews, son of Gregory Andrews of Hedgesville, W.Va., and grandson of George and Jean Weagly of Hagerstown, is a journeyman air traffic controller with the 436 OSS/OSAR stationed at Dover (Del.) Air Force Base. He was deployed to an undisclosed location overseas June 24, 2003.

Andrews is a 1997 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.




Navy Seaman Charles J. Mitchell, son of Mary G. Gole of Alexandria, Va., and Charles Mitchell of Mount Airy, Md., recently graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine Course at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn.




Jacob L. Justus, son of Tabb L. and Laura A. Justus of Waynesboro, Pa., has been awarded an Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) college scholarship.

Justus is a 2003 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School.
