Bigger fireworks show planned

WILLIAMSPORT - Next year, the town's Fourth of July fireworks show will have extra oomph.

The Town Council voted Monday to pay more to get a slightly bigger show.

This year, Schaefer Pyrotechnics of Strasburg, Pa., charged Williamsport $6,300 for the show, according to a cost summary distributed to council members. The show was made up of an opening barrage, a main body, a midlevel display and a finale.

Council members on Monday considered whether to choose a $6,800 display or a $7,300 display. They chose the $6,800 display, which will have more shells in the main body and the finale than this year's show had.

Councilwoman Roxann L. Long said she was inclined to go "the whole way" and get the biggest show - until Assistant Mayor Walter W. Tracy Jr. convinced her that the display could get too popular and attract a lot of people who don't live in town.
