Roundup - HCC's Jennings gets coaching honor

COLLEGE BASEBALL



Hagerstown Community College baseball coach Scott Jennings was recently named NJCAA Division I Eastern Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Jennings will be honored at the Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year banquet in San Antonio on Jan. 3, 2004.

Jennings was also the Region XX Coach of the Year.

Also, Rick Keefer has been added to HCC's coaching staff as an assistant. Keefer previously coached the Williamsport Post 202 American Legion team.




ADULT LEAGUES



Brunswick set for region semis


BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Brunswick Orioles won three of their first four games to earn a berth in today's semifinals at the National Amateur Baseball Federation East Coast Regional Tournament.

After suffering a loss to Buffalo (N.Y.) in their first game by a score of 5-3, the Orioles went on to defeat Boardman (Ohio), 3-1. Willie McLain was the winning pitcher, Scott Frye got the save and both Gerrad Talkington and Kevin Goode had two hits for Brunswick.

In the third game of the tournament, the Orioles beat Warren (Ohio), 10-6. Kevin Goode hit a pair of two-run homers in the game while Steve Goode had two hits, including a home run, and Wayne Thoms added two hits. Jimmy Jackson got the win after throwing six innings of three-hit ball with five strikeouts.

Brunswick later pulled off a 5-3 victory over Cleveland behind Frye's complete-game 11-strikeout performance. Thoms had three hits while Chris Shearer, Kevin Goode, and Talkington each added two for the Orioles.

The championship game is Sunday.

Hagerstown Area Church Softball


St. James 18, Virginia Avenue 17: Kyle Flook had five hits, including a home run, and T.J. Everett added three hits for St. James. John Kennedy had five hits, while Bill Green and Cliff Miles had four each for Virginia Avenue.

Williamsport AOG 22, Crossroads Green 8: Matt Werry and Brian Lewis each had five hits and Ryan Householder added four for Williamsport.

Tri-State 24, Christ Lutheran 7: Todd Streett had five hits, while Howard Metger and Blaine Smith each had four hits and Metger homered for Tri-State. Don Wilson had three hits for Christ Lutheran.

Glade Valley Junior Golf


The Glade Valley Junior Golf Championships are set for Thursday at Glade Valley Golf Club in Walkersville, Md., beginning at 9 a.m.

There will be three divisions for boys and girls - A (age 16-18; 18 holes), B (13-15; 18 holes) and C (10-12; nine holes). Cost is $25.

Softball league accepting teams


The Washington County Frostbite Softball League is now accepting teams for the 2003 season. Games will start the second week of September and will be played at the Hagerstown Fairgrounds park on Saturdays during the season. Entry fee will be $290. In-Line Hockey League


Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is holding registration for the fall In-Line Hockey League, open to ages 5-16 as of Sept. 1.

Cost is $30 for Berkeley County residents and $40 for out-of-county residents. There is a $25 jersey fee for any new player or any player changing divisions or teams. Skating evaluations will be held Aug. 23 at Oatesdale Park. Squirts will skate at 10 a.m., Minors at 10:30 and Majors at 11. Boys basketball camp


Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for the Boys Basketball Skills Camp. Registration is open to any boy entering grades 3-8.

The camp focuses on fundamentals and includes lunch, a T-shirt, a shooting competition and swimming. Registration fee is $85. Camp is limited to the first 60 entrants. For more information, call the M-BC Parks and Recreation office at 304-264-4842.

Girls basketball league


Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is holding registration for the Fall 2003 Girls Basketball League, which is open to any girl ages 8-14 and in grades 3-8 as of Sept. 1.

Registration fee is $30, and a copy of the player's birth certificate should be made for new players. Leagues will be divided between grades 3-6 and grades 7-8. The draft will be held Sept. 3-4 in the evening and Sept. 6 in the morning. Deadline for registration is Aug. 14. For more information, call the M-BC Parks and Recreation office at 304-264-4842.

Mighty Mites basketball


Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is holding registration for the Fall 2003 Mighty Mites Instructional Basketball program. Classes begin Sept. 6 and conclude Nov. 1 with no classes on Oct. 18.

Classes will be held at Hedgesville Middle, South Middle and Musselman Middle schools. Fee is $30, and the deadline for registration is Aug. 28. Applications must include a copy of the child's birth certificate. For more information, call the M-BC Parks and Recreation office at 304-264-4842.
