Suns roast Crawdads

August 08, 2003

HICKORY, N.C. - After falling behind 4-0 and managing one hit through five innings, the Hagerstown Suns had the Hickory Crawdads right where they wanted them.

The Suns roared to life with 11 unanswered runs - including a four-run sixth inning and a five-run ninth - to roast the Crawdads 11-4 and stay in the lead for the Wild Card playoff spot in the South Atlantic League Northern Division.

Hagerstown (58-54, 23-22) remains a half-game up on Greensboro for the Wild Card spot.

Suns starter Merkin Valdez (6-5) allowed a pair of runs in the first and, after retiring 11 straight, allowed two more in the fifth. But Hagerstown's offense got him off the hook.

Randy Walter and Jake Wald led off the sixth with solo homers, and Brian Buscher's two-run double with two outs in the frame tied it at 4-4.

Kevin Kelly's two-run homer gave the Suns a 6-4 lead in the eighth, and Buscher's bases-loaded, two-run single capped the five-run ninth. Buscher is 5-for-9 with seven RBI in the last two games.

Hagerstown's three home runs tied its most in one game this season.
