Interim principal is appointed at Charles Town Middle School

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Dale Shaffer, who has served as the lead teacher at T.A. Lowery Elementary School for the last 11 years, has been appointed as interim principal of Charles Town Middle School, Superintendent of Schools R. Steven Nichols said Thursday.

Shaffer replaces Larry Mullin, who is retiring after three years as principal at the school, Nichols said.

Nichols said Shaffer is being named interim principal because school officials do not have time before school starts to find a permanent replacement for Mullin.

It is important to get someone on board now so the school can prepare for the start of classes on Aug. 26, Nichols said.

"We needed a principal there yesterday," Board of Education President Lori Stilley said.

The formal interviewing process for the job will be later this year and could take up to several months, Nichols said.

Shaffer's appointment to the Charles Town Middle School position will be presented to the board for confirmation on Aug. 19, Nichols said.

Earlier in the year, the school board gave Nichols the authority to hire people to positions, then bring those hirings to the board for confirmation at a subsequent meeting, Stilley said.

It is especially important for Nichols to have that authority now when personnel changes are occurring quickly, Stilley said.

Nichols said it is a tough time of the year to find someone to fill a principal's position because many people in the education field already are set in their jobs for the coming year.
