Roundup - Steiner tops shootout field

Bever Creek's Pat Steiner topped a field of 20 to win the WACO Chi-Chi's Shootout Thursday at Beaver Creek Country Club.

Steiner defeated Brandon Hendrickson on a sudden death chipoff on the final hole after both players had parred 18. Hendrickson chipped to within 10 feet, 9 inches from the hole, only to have Steiner come within 8-3 of the cup.

Steiner had driven 600 miles from a previously-scheduled engagement in Indiana to make it to the shootout. Greg Henry was third, followed by Randy Cree and Mark Weber.

The Jim Ward "Big Daddy Long Drive" takes place at 5 p.m. today and the 20th WACO Open gets under way Saturday.

Hagerstown Seniors


O'Neill Physical Therapy 17, AFL-CIO 12: Bob Stotlemyer had four hits and Cliff Rice and Bernie Wolf had three hits each for O'Neill. Grant Kimble and Marvin Alexander each had three hits for AFL-CIO.

Hub City Softball


Funkstown Moose 16, South End Tavern 14: Greg Mills had four hits for South End Tavern while Steve Yost, Brad Crawford and Tony Butts each had three hits.

Hagerstown Church


Otterbein 20, New Life 10

Virginia Avenue Church of God 18, Williamsport Assembly of God 8: Willie Beard and Bill Green each had five hits for Virginia Avenue. and Mike Pickerall had four hits. Mike Trumpower had three hits including two home runs for Williamsport.

Greencastle 10, National 4: Greencastle's Denton Cordell led the way with three hits while Devin Diehl, Zack Wilcox, Denver Cordell and Aaron Bumbaugh each had two hits.




COLLEGE



Academic award for two


Area athletes attending Bridgewater College were named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic team for 2002-03.

Matthew Johnson of Hagerstown and Tony Smallwood of Martinsburg, W.Va. were selected to the team, which requires a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

Softball Meeting


An orginizational meeting for the 2003 Roy Rogers Frederick Fall Softball League will be held August 10, at 7 p.m. at Ballenger Creek Park by Field One. Teams should be prepared to play their $360 entry fee at this time. For more details contact Dave Hickman at 301-834-7040.

Baseball Try-Outs


The Tri-State Tigers 11- under and 12-under traveling baseball teams will be holding tryouts for the 2003 fall season and the 2004 season. Rules Clinic


The WVSSAC rules clinic for football, soocer and athletic trainers will be held at Hedgesville High School tonight beginning at 6:00 p.m. Please enter the building by the main doors on the auditorium end of the building.

Woodbat Softball


The Leroy Koogle Memorial Woodbat Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 16-17 at Middletown Park. The entry fee is $150 per team and bats and balls will be provided. All proceeds benefit Jeremiah Keller. For more information contact Harold at 301-371-4242.

Hub City Sluggers Travel Softball Tryouts


The Hub City Sluggers travel softball organization will hold try outs for their 2003-2004 teams. Try outs for 12-under, 14-under, 16-under and 18-under teams will be held from 5-8 p.m. on August 24, 26, 28 and 31 at Pinesburg Softball Complex. Players must attend at least two try outs.
