Festival promises to be a 'peach'

Festivals don't get much peachier than this one.

The Leitersburg Ruritan Club will sponsor its 24th annual Peach Festival on Saturday, Aug. 9, and Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Leitersburg Community Park. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

About 10,000 people are expected to turn out for the event, says Ruritan Club member Kenny Mongan, chairman of the Peach Festival committee.

The festival features homemade peach pies, peach ice cream and fresh peaches, plus roast beef, country ham, pork barbecue and Italian sausage sandwiches, French fries, hot dogs, funnel cakes and other edible goodies. Local orchardists also will sell their tree-ripened fruits, jellies and jams.

The Leitersburg Homemakers will again host a homemade peach pie contest, with ribbons and cash prizes awarded to winners in the one- and two-crust categories. Pies must be submitted by 11 a.m. Saturday. Results will be announced at noon, and the winning pies will then be auctioned off.

Bluegrass and country music band Ernie Bradley & Grassy Ridge and rock 'n' roll band Saxy will entertain festival-goers as they eat and browse the festival's large selection of arts and crafts. About 70 vendors are expected to give demonstrations and sell their wares at this year's event, Mongan says.

"We've got pretty much everything you can think of when it comes to arts and crafts - from woodworking to ceramics to jewelry to paintings," he says.

Pony rides, a petting zoo and horse-drawn wagon rides will be available for children. And history buffs will have the opportunity to check out a Civil War encampment in the community park's wooded area, and a display of historical Leitersburg memorabilia in the nearby Leitersburg Fire Hall. Antique tractors also will be shown at the festival.

A handmade quilt will be auctioned off Sunday at the close of the festival. For anyone who wants to mark the event, Peach Festival T-shirts will be sold all weekend.
