July 31, 2003|by LAURA ERNDE

Washington County Planning Director Robert Arch fell ill at his home Tuesday and was hospitalized, officials said.

Arch, 52, was listed in serious condition Wednesday afternoon at Washington County Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

County officials declined to give details, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Arch's family could not be reached.

As county planning director, Arch is involved in all the county's growth and development decisions.

He also served as co-chair of the Antietam Commemoration Committee, which organized the 140th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Antietam.
