Evelyn J. Moore


CASCADE - Evelyn Jane McClain Moore, 89, of 25454 Military Road, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

Born Oct. 16, 1913, in Sabillasville, Md., she was the daughter of the late John R. and Annabelle Moser McClain.

Her husband, Fred L. Moore, died Feb. 17, 1986. They were married Aug. 6, 1929.

She attended school in Sabillasville.

She worked as the custodian at the Blue Ridge Summit (Pa.) branch of First National Bank of Waynesboro (Pa.).

She was a member of Germantown Bethel Church of God in Cascade.

She was a member of National AARP and Cascade American Legion Post 239 Ladies' Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Joanne E. Johnson of Cascade and Shirley K. Holloway of Lake Placid, Fla.; one sister, Edith Morrow of Athens, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one infant son, Fred L. Moore Jr.; six sisters, Ruth McKissick, Esta Alexander, Mary Fleagle, Agnes Kipe, Beulah Ridge and Lillian Ricard; and five brothers, Charles McClain, Lewis McClain, Victor McClain, Billy McClain and Harry McClain.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Germantown Bethel Church of God in Cascade. Pastor Bruce Henneman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home in Waynesboro.

Mildred A. Jarvis


SOUTH MOUNTAIN, Pa. -Mildred A. Jarvis, 76, of 10058 South Mountain Road, and formerly of Bridgeville, Pa., died Monday, July 28, 2003, at South Mountain Restoration Center.

Born May 22, 1927, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late John and Kirsh Jarvis.

She was a Protestant.

She had been employed as a stock clerk.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Services and burial in St. Paul Cemetery in Pittsburgh, will be private.

There will be no public viewing.

Arrangements are by Lochstampfor Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa.




Melvin S. Gordon


MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Melvin S. "Scott" Gordon, 81, of 12202 Sylvan Drive, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 30, 1921, in Sylvan, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry A. and Louie Johnson Gordon.

He farmed in Little Cove, Pa., retiring in 1978.

He was a former assessor for Warren Township.

He was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Little Cove.

He was a member of Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517 of Mercersburg; Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241 of Mercersburg; Wesley Yeager American Legion Post 606 of Fort Loudon, Pa.; Eagles Club of Gettysburg, Pa.; and AMVETS of Chambersburg, Pa.

He is survived by two sisters, A. Marie Keefer and Vera J. Keefer, both of Mercersburg; nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma Winters, Jane Phenicie and Ruby Helman.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg. The Rev Alan R. Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Visitation will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Joshua J. Summerville


OAKLAND, Md. - Joshua J. Summerville, 16, of Bray School Road, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital in Oakland, the result of an automobile accident near McHenry, Md.

Born Nov. 16, 1986, in Fort Worth, Texas, he was the son of John E. Summerville of Hagerstown and Sandra L. Morgan Summerville Cook of Oakland.

He worked for C & S Contracting in Oakland.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, William Cook of Oakland; his stepmother, Jen Summerville of Hagerstown; two sisters, Jenna Summerville and Taylor Smith, both of Oakland; one brother, Charlie Summerville of Hagerstown; and paternal great-grandmothers, Bessie Oesterling and Betty Summerville, both of Butler, Pa.

Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Richard M. Barnhart


Richard Merle "Barney" Barnhart, 67, of 801 Dewey Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born May 9, 1936, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Albert and Elva Sharon Barnhart.

He was employed by Mack Trucks for 34 years, retiring in 1996.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of UAW.
