A Washington County woman died Tuesday morning after her car struck a tree and a guardrail in the median of Interstate 81 north of Hagerstown, Maryland State Police said.

Alicia Ann Cox, 19, of 14125 William Talcott Lane, Hagerstown, was on her way to work, driving south on I-81 near the 10-mile marker after merging onto the interstate from Showalter Road, Cpl. Wayne Wachsmuth said.

Police believed Cox was driving about 80 mph when she lost control of her car as she was changing from the right lane to the left, Wachsmuth said.

Cox's silver 1994 Buick Century struck an oak tree in the median, then struck a guardrail and split on impact, police said.
