A West Virginia man was killed and a Pennsylvania woman was critically injured Sunday evening in a motorcycle accident on Interstate 81 in Franklin County, Pa., according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Bennie E. Lansberry, 52, of 9203 Hedgesville Road, Hedgesville, W.Va., was pronounced dead at 7:52 p.m. in Chambersburg Hospital, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner. He said an autopsy was scheduled for this morning at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, Pa., to determine the cause of death.

Victoria Chapman, 46, of 15610 Cresap Ave., State Line, Pa., was flown to Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center after the 7:22 p.m. accident and was listed in critical condition Monday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police said Lansberry was the operator of the 1986 Harley-Davidson and Chapman was his passenger.

They were riding north when the motorcycle went onto the asphalt shoulder and struck a guardrail, police said.

Lansberry and Chapman were thrown from the motorcycle and down an embankment, police said. Police did not indicate whether they were wearing helmets.

The accident closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 between exits 10 and 14 for about two hours. The accident happened north of milepost 13, police said.

Lansberry's family could not be reached Monday.

It was the third fatal accident within 48 hours in the county, according to Conner, and the seventh fatal crash in the last four weeks on county roads.

"There's no rhyme or reason to it," Conner said. "Sometimes it's quiet. This hasn't been one of those times."
