PONY 13s fall short in region final

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Tim Leather had two hits, including a home run, and Tommy Evans also homered but it was all the offense that the Hagerstown PONY 13-year-old All-Stars could manage as they dropped a 15-3 decision to Mon-Youg (Pa.) in the East Zone West Region final.

Hagerstown, which advanced out of the losers' bracket in the double-elimination tournament, forced a final game as Aaron Mills pitched a four-hitter and had two hits, including a two-run home run for a 6-4 win over Mon-Youg. Patrick Phillips added two hits for Hagerstown.

Hagerstown finished the tournament in second place with a 5-2 record.


Funkstown wins states, national bid

GLEN BURNIE, Md. - Scott Remsberg hit .714 and earned Most Valuable Player honors as Funkstown Moose won the NSA Class D state title to earn a berth in the Super D World Series in Las Vegas on Oct. 10-12.

Funkstown Moose defeated Sunrise Pools, of Baltimore - a team it lost to earlier in the tournamnent - 18-8 in the championship game. Funkstown finished with a 5-1 record.


Steve Hartle, Lew Thomas and Donnie Gipe all hit over .600 for Funkstown Moose, while K.C. Hutzel and Dale Reed each hit over .570 and Brad Weaver, Brent Raley and Matt Jenkins carried over a .500 average for the tournament.

Jerry's qualifies for nationals

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Steve Presgraves, Dave Foltz and Pudge Eby all hit over .600 to lead Jerry's Sports to a third place finish Grand Summer Slam Qualifer. The finish won Jerry's Sports a berth in the USSSA East Coast Class D Nationals in Boston.


Mt. Airy 3-6, Funkstown 2-4

FUNKSTOWN - Funkstown Post 211 missed a chance to advance to the Western Maryland District playoffs Saturday when it was swept by Mt. Airy in a regular-season ending doubleheader.

David Miner hit a pair of solo home runs, one in the first and the other in the fifth, for all of Funkstown's offense and Mt. Airy's David Stone pitched a complete game.

In the nightcap, Miner added another two hits while Phillip Powell and Matt Tedrick homered for Funkstown, which finished the season 26-15-1 and 6-6 in the second half of the district season.


CRESEPTOWN, Md. - Dana Sweeney hit a sacrifice fly and Ashley Linhart followed with a game-winning RBI single to lead Thurmont to a 5-4 win over Cumberland Dapper to win the Maryland State Senior League Softball title.

The 14-16 year-old team advance to play in the Eastern Regional in West Haven, Conn., on Aug. 2 against Vermont. The winner of the regional advances to the Senior League Softball World Series.

Lauren Wildasin and Mandi Lambert combined on four-hitter in the championship game while Kayla West had two hits and two RBI. Jen Kelly, Sara Wastler, Linhart and Sweeney finished with two hits each.


River City Classic

West End 9, Frederick National 1: Kenny Kitchen pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead West End. Brandon Hess added two hits.

East Frederick 7, South Mountain 3: Garrett Walther, Matthew Lawrence, Danny Dixon combined on a one-hitter to lead East Frederick. Lawrence had four hits and two RBI while Walther and Nicholas Baker added two hits each. Brad Hershberger had South Mountain's only hit and drove in a run.

Hancock 11, Frederick National 4: Ryan Harper struck out 13 and had three hits and four RBI to lead Hancock. Tanner Dobrzanski drove in three runs while Seth Hall had two hits and two RBI in the win. Evan Campbell struck out six for Frederick National.

Ace 12, Redmen 1: Kris Creek had two hits and drove in four runs while Ashley Creek added two hits and three RBI to lead Ace. Katie Jarvis homered and drove in three runs.

Aladdin Awards 12, Ace 6: Erin White had three hits and Jamie Fowler added two to lead Aladdin Awards. Kris Creek, Dee Brown and Tara Shaffer each had two hits and two RBI for Ace.

Ace 15, Middletown Sports 3: Dee Brown had three hits, including a home run, and six RBI to lead Ace. Ashley Creek added three hits and four RBI while Taylor Shaffer had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI. Amanda Coe had two hits for Middletown Sports.

Aladdin Awards 9, Ace 5: Chris Embly had two triples and four RBI while Jessica Marshall had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Aladdin in the championship game. Dee Brown hit a home run, three triples and drove in four runs to pace Ace's second-place finish.


Bloomquist dominates Silver Cup

Scott Bloomquist, of Mooresburg, Tenn., led from start to finish to dominate the Xtreme Dirtcar Racing Series Maryland Silver Cup Nationals Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway.
