Miner, Hess homer to lift Funkstown

LEGION BASEBALL



David Miner and Matt Hess hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh as Funkstown Post 211 rallied from five runs down in the final inning Thursday for a 10-9 win over Frederick.

Miner tied the game at 9-9 with a three-run homer, his second of the game. Hess followed with a solo shot to end the game.

Miner and Hess each finished with three hits. Matt Tederick had two hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth, for Funkstown (26-13, 6-4).

Alex Dube and Travis Hebron homered for Frederick. Dan Leatherman added two hits in the loss.




YOUTH LEAGUES



Colt League West Regional


Monyough 11, St. Clairsville 5: Bean Heller had three hits, including a home run, for Monyough. Ryan Vicker led St. Clairesville with two hits.

Lawrance County 8, South Adams 2: Tim Kearney hit two home runs for Lawrance County. Conner McKee had two hits for South Adams.

Hancock 3, Conococheague 0: Ben Hoopengardner had two hits, including a home run, to lead Hancock.

Hancock 8, Maugansville 2: Winning pitcher Josh Hall had seven strikeouts, while Justin Berkstresser had three hits and Natasha Bard, Kyle Smith, Hall, Dylan Whiteside and Jesse Smartt each added two for Hancock.

Hagerstown Church League


Smithsburg Valley Baptist 19, Concordia 4: Matt Poe had five hits, while Jamie Miller added four to lead Smithsburg Valley Baptist.

Otterbein 19, St. Mark's 12: Mike Buhrman had five hits, including a home run, for Otterbein. Alan Weaver and Larry Wisherd homered in the win.

St. James 23, Gateway 8: Lloyd Kelly, Mark Starliper and Bobby Hayes each had four hits to lead St. James. Kelly and Hayes also homered. Matt Shelton hit a grand slam for Gateway.

Tri-State Fast-Pitch League


Clear Spring 11, Mack 8: Mark Bragunier and Russ Martin had four hits each, while John Ardinger added two triples to lead Clear Spring. Bill McIntire and Pete Dumore each had two hits for Mack.

Hub City League


Intimidator Trucking 25, Lennox 19: Phil Fox, Adam Moore, Charlie Yeakle and Scott Yeakle had four hits each for Intimidator. Fox homered in the win.

South End 16, S.L. Woodring 11: Matt Moats had four hits, while Steve Yost and Tony Butts each added three for South End. Butts homered in the win.

Eddie's 12, South End 7: Geg Mills had three hits for South End.




BRIEFS



Gary Brown 5-Miler set


The 22nd annual Gary Brown Memorial C&O Canal Five-Mile Run is set for Aug. 23 at 8 a.m. at Riverbottom Park, adjacent to the C&O Canal in Williamsport.

The race is part of the annual C&O Canal Days Festival.

Registration is limited to the first 200 entrants. Race day registration is $20. The pre-registration fee is $15 through Aug. 16. All finishers receive a T-shirt. Awards go to the top overall and age-group finishers.

Rules clinics to be held


The WVSSAC Rules Clinics for volleyball and cheer teams will be held Aug. 2 at 12:30 p.m. at Hedgesville High School.

The WVSSAC Rules Clinics for football, soccer and athletic trainers will be held Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. at Hedgesville High School.

Enter the school by using the main doors at the auditorium end of the building for either meeting.

Hedgesville football tickets on sale


2003 Hedgesville football season tickets will go on sale starting August 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reserved seats from last year will be held until August 8 at which time they will be open for anyone to purchase. The Eagles will play home games this season against Martinsburg, Frankfort, Rockville (Md.), Fort Hill, and Musselman. The cost is $30 per ticket, with limited reserve parking available for $10. "Promise 03" to be held


The Frederick Church of the Brethren, in cooperation with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and other county churches, are inviting all Tri-State area teens to "Promise 03."

The event, to be held on August 22 at FCOB, will feature a free concert by "Common Clay" and a guest appearance from former Maryland and NBA player Adrian Branch. The event will begin at 8 p.m. and will have free food and drinks. Branch will be available for an autograph session, and gifts will be given away.
