July 23, 2003

SALISBURY, Md. - South Mountain spotted West Salisbury three runs before missing on two last-inning scoring opportunities Tuesday in a 3-1 loss in the winner's bracket final of the Maryland State 11-12 Tournament.

The win moves West Salisbury into Thursday's championship round where it will meet the winner of today's 5:45 p.m. losers' bracket final between South Mountain and Northern Calvert.

West Salisbury scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings while pitchers David Brown, Kyle Yingling and Kyle Graham combined on a four-hitter.

Trailing 2-0, South Mountain loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth but Adam Chambers flied out to end the threat.

South Mountain scored in the sixth as John Shobe walked, took second on a passed ball and scored on Josh Smith's single. South Mountain got the tying runs to second and third with two outs but couldn't get the clutch hit to tie the game.

Smith pitched a complete game, striking out two.

West Salisbury, the District 8 champ and tournament host, scored in the first on Yingling's bunt single and doubled the lead in the second on Chris Walter's home run. Nathan Sego led off the fifth with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball with the bases loaded.
