A 5-year-old city girl remained hospitalized Tuesday in a Washington, D.C., hospital after she was run over by a van in her back yard.

A Hagerstown Police Department spokeswoman said Tuesday that Shania Shockey of the first block of East Baltimore Street was listed in critical condition at Children's Medical Center.

A Children's Medical Center spokeswoman said Tuesday she was not authorized to comment about Shockey's condition.

A MedSTAR helicopter flew the youngster to the medical center, according to a MedSTAR fight paramedic. She had sustained severe head injuries, police said.

Police said Monday that a van driven by Roger B. Seal, 24, of Hagerstown, struck the child Monday evening in a parking lot/backyard area behind the first block of East Baltimore Street.

A police spokesman said Monday that Seal was a family friend who stopped by the home for a brief visit.

Witnesses said the girl was playing with a hula hoop at the rear of the van before the accident.

The police spokesman said the investigation into the incident was ongoing. She said no charges had been filed.
