July 22, 2003

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts will present singer and guitarist Phyllis Chapell at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. The recital is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception hosted by members of the museum's volunteer organization, The Singer Society.

Her repertoire includes nine languages, featuring songs from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Her 3-octave singing range is supported by her acoustic guitar play. Her songs range from percussive Brazilian sambas and explosive flamenco rumbas to classical arias, folk and jazz original ballads.

The performance will begin with "The Way You Look Tonight" by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields, and include "La Vie en Rose" by Louiguy and Edith Piaf. Piaf's ballad will be sung in French followed by a Brazilian samba in Portuguese from the film "Black Orpheus." Among other selections, Chapell will perform "Georgia on My Mind" by Hoagy Carmichael and "Blackbird" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
