Braves open semis with win

Jamus Peterman tossed a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run as the Hagerstown Braves defeated Fayettville 6-1 in the first game of the best-of-5 league semifinals at North Hagerstown on Friday.

The Braves (31-5) broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI infield base hits from Kevin Crawford and Trey Cobb. Nate Reese followed up with a two-run double to extend the Hagerstown lead.

The Braves host Fayetteville today at 2 p.m.

Brunswick 17, Waynesboro 2

BRUNSWICK, Md. - John Mangold had two hits and five RBI and Wayne Toms hit a two-run double as Brunswick strolled past Waynesboro in the first game of the best-of-5 league semifinals.

The Orioles (26-7) scored 17 runs on just nine hits, but reached base 15 times on walks.

Rusty Lynn and Steve Fridinger had two hits each for Waynesboro, which will try to even the series today at 5 p.m.



NABF Mid-Atlantic Tournament

Huntington Hounds 14, Funkstown 7: Steve Blevins had three hits, while Drew Blair and Dax Adkins each had two hits for Huntington. Matt Murray, Jeremy McAfee and Trevor Cobb all had two hits for Funkstown.

Funkstown 14, Long Island 13: A.J. Bandeff had three hits, while Orland Dean, Matt Murray, Jordan Beard, Colby Thompson and Trevor Cobb all had two hits for Funkstown. Thompson hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth.

Chesapeake Clippers 8, Williamsport 5: Matt Stazo, Phil Kraska and Brad Miller all had two hits for the Clippers. Corey Itnyre and Cody Beard had two hits apiece for Williamsport, which faces Funkstown today at 12:30 p.m.

Howard County 11, Lakeshore 4

PONY 14-year-old sectional tourney

Chambersburg 17, Walkersville 5: Zach Cooper and Zach Hart each had three hits, while Zach Frelin and Ryan Lehman each added two hits for Chambersburg.

Hagerstown B 14, Middletown 2: Jason Sutherland had three home runs and six RBI to lead Hagerstown. Justin Bussard also had three hits, including a solo home run, and Kenny Shanholtz hit a grand slam in the win. J.J. Paglianette led Middletown with two hits, including a home run, and Aaron Main added a solo homer.

Thomas Evans Tournament at National

Maugansville 13, Federal 3: Brian Lafferty had three hits, including a home run, and Kyle Walters added three hits for Maugansville. T.J. Socks and Brandon Glazer each had two hits for the winners. Jeremy Barron had two hits for Federal.

Halfway 9, Conococheague 8: Josh Cline had two hits, including a home run, and Dylan Zimmerman added two hits for Halfway. Colby McCauley had three hits, including a homer, while Jesse Buchman, Justin Hott and Dereck Monroe each had two hits for Conococheague.

Waynesboro 7-8 tourney

Smithsburg 16, Waynesboro 5: Zane Gardenhour had three hits, including a home run, and struck out seven in three innings of pitching to lead Smithsburg. Christian Buttry had two hits, including a home run, while Thomas Smith and Kevin Deshong each had two hits for Smithsburg. Brandon Yurek had two hits for Waynesboro.


Hagerstown Area Church Softball

Crossroads Tan 17, Crossroads Green 16: Chuck Frank and Dave Davis each homered twice to lead Crossroads Tan. Ted Smith homered for Crossroads Green.

Nazarene 18, Bethel 4: Shawn Barkley had four hits, while Greg Wright, Steve Frame and Dustin Gearhart each added three and Ned Householder homered for Nazarene.

Christ Lutheran 28, Otterbein 8: Curtis Berry had four hits, while Ed Beachly, Andy Koontz, Ed Whitt, Mark Angler and Don Wilson each added three to lead Christ Lutheran. Beachly and Donnie Tyler homered in the victory. Kirk Graham and Rodney Ridgely each had three hits for Otterbein.

Virginia Avenue 18, Concordia 3: Ben Shade, Jason Gladhill, Caleb Moses, Mike Pickeral and Craig Householder each had three hits for Virginia Avenue. Jan Poole and Terry Brown had three hits each for Concordia.
