Hagerstown PONY League Championship series

Elks 9, Goodwill 7: Jason Sutherland had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI for Elks, while Derrick Hendershot had three hits, Scott Myers and Tim Leather each had two hits and Brock Jamison had 11 strikeouts in five innings. Marcellus Sumlin had two hits and 11 strikeouts for Goodwill. Elks leads the best-of-3 series, 1-0.

Third-place series

F&M 8, Redmen 7: Kenny Shanholtz had two hits, including a two-run homer, for F&M, while Guido Roche and John Mason each added two hits. Mark Dattilio hit two home runs for Redmen, while Cadyn Robinson had two hits, including a homer. F&M leads the best-of-3 series, 1-0.


Hub City Softball League

Broad Axe/BJ's Custom Designs 16, Lennox 10: Brian Smith, Jeff Foltz, Pork Wallech, Doug Keller and Jimmy Taylor each had three hits for Broad Axe. Wallech hit two home runs and Smith added one.


Broad Axe/Miller Lite 17, Thompson's Gas 7: Brian Smith had four hits, while Jeff Foltz and Pork Wallech each had three hits for Broad Axe. Wallech, Eric Andrews and Eric Leather all homered.

Hagerstown Church Softball

Five Forks 9, St. James 0: Micah Bumbaugh, Nathan Strite and Brad Livingood each had three hits for Five Forks. Mike Hull and Mike Starliper had three hits each for St. James.

Grace 15, Ringgold 14: Bryan Kelly had five hits, while Tim Klick and Allan Strasburg each had three hits and Doug Nigh homered for Grace.

Gateway 9, St. Mark's 4: Brandon Evans and Gary Durboraw homered for Gateway.

Hagerstown Senior Softball

AFL-CIO 16, Maugansville Ruritan 11: Sam Stewart was 4-for-4, including a home run, for AFL-CIO. Gary Gruber and Jack Monn each had three hits, including a home run, for the winners.


Colbert, Roslov win big

BOONSBORO - Ashley Colbert and Boris Roslov each won three events at the third meet of the Pete Wright Memorial All-Comers Summer Track & Field Series.

Colbert, 16, won the women's 100-meter dash (13.7 seconds), 400 (1:08.1) and mile (6:30.9), while Roslov, 17, took the men's 400 (55.9), long jump (18 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and discus (107-5).

Michael Bond and Hayley Harnett each won two events. Bond, 19, captured the men's 100 (12.1) and 200 (24.9), while Harnett, 14, won the women's 200 (28.1) and 800 (2:39.7).

Other winners were: Brandon Boyer, 14, in the men's 800 (2:31.2); Andy Franklin, 17, in the men's mile (4:58.2); Ted Poulos, 41, in the men's 2-mile (10:42.8); Mandy Spickler in the women's long jump (14-6 3/4); Matt Wallace, 17, in the men's high jump (5-6); and Tyler Jones, 17, in the men's shot put (45-4).


Shank scored hole-in-one

Rodney Shank hit a hole-in-one at Yingling's Golf Center, acing the 75-yard, par-3 seventh hole with a 7-iron.

Phil Shank witnessed the performance.


Tourney at Black Rock

Black Rock Golf Course will conduct a two-person, best net ball tournament Aug. 13 with a 12:30 shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded. Entry fee is $40 per player. For information, contact John Roney at 301-791-8480.

Colt tourney begins

The Colt League sectional tournament begins tonight with a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. at Hellane Park in Hagerstown.

Chambersburg will face Taneytown in the first game, followed by Hagerstown C and Anne Arundel 1 at 8:30.

Anne Arundel 2 plays Hagerstown B at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Hagerstown C-Anne Arundel 1 winner vs. South Adams at 8:30 p.m.

Play continues in the double elimination tournament throughout the weekend, culminating with the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
