Batter:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1 egg
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
- 3 to 4 drops almond extract
- 2 cups sour cherries, hulled
Topping:
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup butter, slightly softened
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup chopped almonds
Heat oven to 370 degrees. Grease 8-by-8-inch square baking pan.
For batter, cream sugar, butter and egg. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to the sugar mixture. Stir well to combine. Mix in milk and almond extract. Fold in cherries. Spread batter into pan.
