CAC may help with energy bills

July 08, 2003

The Washington County Community Action Council is accepting applications for heating and electric bill assistance for Washington County residents. The program is funded through the Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs.

The Maryland Energy Assistance Program assists income eligible households with winter heating costs by providing a direct benefit to the customer's heating vendor.

The Electric Universal Service Bill Assistance Program (electric bill assistance) assists customers by placing them on a budget billing and providing a monthly electric credit to their electric account.

Electric Universal Service Arrearage Program (electric bill arrearage assistance) assists customers with electric bill arrearages. A customer may receive an electric arrearage benefit only once.

Households in last year's program will receive their applications in the mail in the next several weeks.

Income eligibility guidelines are based on family size. For example, a family of four is eligible if its monthly gross income does not exceed $2,300 or $27,600 for the year.

Residents who did not participate in the past year can call Community Action Council at 301-797-4161 to make an appointment or to have an application mailed to them.
