Janet C. Hess

Janet Catherine Dutch Hess, 76, of 17308 Cloverleaf Road, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at her home.

Born March 20, 1927, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Raymond H. Sr. and Blanche M. Bender Harrison.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Andrew Penrose.

She was a graduate of

Hagerstown High School.

She had been employed by Henson Aviation.

She was a member of Church of the Holy Trinity.

She is survived by her husband, Stuart Hess; one daughter, Jennifer Kriner of Clear Spring; three stepdaughters, Linda Monninger of Falling Waters, W.Va., Christine Campbell of Charlotte, N.C., and Diane Whittington of Hagerstown; two stepsons, Jay Hess of Hagerstown, and Gregory Hess of Falling Waters; two grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.


She was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey L. Penrose; and one brother, Raymond H. Harrison Jr.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Reginald Rice will officiate. Burial will be in Saint Thomas (Pa.) Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Susan D. Ahr

MANHEIM, Pa. - Susan D. Ahr, 41, of Manheim, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothy King Crawford.

She graduated from Cranford High School in New Jersey.

She worked for Susquehanna Bancshares Inc. in Lititiz, Pa., as a purchasing assistant.

She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Bruce W. Ahr; and one son, James M. Ahr, at home.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Buch Funeral Home in Manheim. Burial will be in Manheim Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Friday at 10 a.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 314 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17603.

Della M. Stapleton

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Della Marie Shumway Stapleton, 82, of 8775 Orlando Drive, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born March 2, 1921, in Rutland, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Arthur S. and Edna Earle Shumway.

She received an associate's degree from Green Mountain Junior College, Poultney, Vt., in 1939; a certificate as a physio-therapist from Eastern School of Physician's Aides in New York City in 1940; a bachelor of art's degree from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt., in 1971, and a master's degree in community counseling from Shippensburg (Pa.) University in 1978.

She was a counselor coordinator at Waynesboro Area Services Center and taught courses at Hagerstown Community College and Westmoreland County Community College.

She was involved with the annual book sale for the Franklin County Legal Services Program and was committed to helping Native American students improve their lives through education.

She is survived by her second husband, J. Philip Stapleton, whom she married April 28, 1973; one daughter, Llyn Ellison of Colchester, Vt.; one son, Arthur Ellison of Concord, N.H.; two stepsons, David Stapleton of Fairfax, Va., and Thomas Stapleton of Massachusetts; one stepdaughter, Linda Olsson of Woburn, Mass.; three adopted daughters, Sarala Shrestha of Waynesboro, Nirmala Cosby of Mont Alto, Pa., and Anita Shrestha of Fairfax; one granddaughter and one grandson.

The family will hold a celebration of life at her home at 8775 Orlando Drive, Five Forks on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The family requests anyone attending brings pictures and memoirs to share. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in East Wallinford, Vt.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.

Garnet M. Gehr Jr.

Garnet M. Gehr Jr., 73, of 12327 Hopscotch Lane, Hagers-

town, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 8, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Garnet M. Gehr Sr. and Nora E. Charles Gehr.

He graduated from Hagerstown High School.

He attended St. Matthew's United Methodist Church.

He was the owner and operator of G.M. Gehr & Son for more than 55 years.
