BOONSBORO - The first annual scholarship established in memory of Jerry Daniel "Danny" Landsman was awarded at the 2003 graduation ceremonies at Boonsboro High School.

This year's recipient was Shannon Davis.

The scholarship was established by his uncle, Rick Landsman, and other family members, according to Julie Schmitt, guidance counselor at the school.

One scholarship will be awarded each year to a Boonsboro High School graduate going to Salisbury University with a 3.0 average or better. The scholarship is not based on financial need but instead stresses good character, community service and extracurricular activities as well as attention to course load.

Schmitt said the scholarship amounts will be up to $1,000.

Landsman, a junior in the business administration honors program, died on Jan. 29, 2003, at Salisbury University at the age of 20. He was the son of Jerry and Catherine C. Dannenfeldt Landsman of Boonsboro.

An honors graduate of Boonsboro High School, Danny participated on the cross country, wrestling and baseball teams.

He had been employed by the National Park Service at Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg.

At college, he was co-director of Salisbury University Saferide, co-president of Salisbury University Fishing Club, a member of the Freshman Honor Society and was involved in other student activities.
