Council votes not to donate money to boy

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Town Council members decided not to contribute money to sponsor a trip for a local youth who is being honored for his poem.

A letter from Kristopher Kornegay-Gober, 11, stated he was asking the town to sponsor a trip to Orlando, Fla., for four people at a cost of $945.

The letter said the Boonsboro Middle School sixth-grader was being honored by the Famous Poets Society for a poem he wrote entitled "In My Quiet Place."

Town Councilman Jeffery Saylor made a motion to donate $200 toward the trip, but none of the other council members seconded the motion.

Town Attorney Charles Wagaman said donating money to a private individual could set a precedent and would make it difficult for the town to turn down future requests from individuals.

Also present at the meeting were Vice Mayor Ralph Hammond and council members Patti Hammond and Marjorie Jamison. Council members Russ Weaver and J.W. Eichelberger were absent.
