Walter J. Downin


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Walter Junior Downin, 61, of 13805 Springbrook Ave., died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at his home.

Born Dec. 22, 1941, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Howard and Marie Patterson Downin.

He attended school in Rouzerville, Pa.

He was an auto body technician who worked for various garages and owned and operated his own shop. He retired in October 2002.

He is survived by three daughters, Bonnie K. Robert and Lori A. Honodel, both of Waynesboro, and Joy D. Reed of Rouzerville; four sons, Tony J. Downin, Brian K. Downin, J. Steve Downin and Jesse A. Downin, all of Waynesboro; three sisters, Betty Downin, Mary Smith and Alice Cramer, all of Waynesboro; two brothers, Paul Downin of Chambersburg, Pa., and Richard Downin of Waynesboro; 14 grandchildren; two aunts; one uncle; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Scott.

Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Harold W. Walton will officiate.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lenora H. Friese


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lenora H. Friese, 77, of 1425 Philadelphia Ave., Apt. 316, and formerly of 107 Highland Circle, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at her home.

Born Oct. 3, 1925, in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Armlon and Mildred Benton Hardee.

Her husband, Carl A. Friese Sr., died Jan. 30, 1998.

She was employed in the cafeteria at J. Frank Faust Junior High School in the Chambersburg Area School District. She retired in 1988.

She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg, where she was a member of the Buds of Promise Sunday School class.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon K. Thompson of Chambersburg; three sons, Carl A. Friese Jr. of Boca Raton, Fla., Daniel R. Friese of Stewartstown, Pa., and William C. Friese of Jonestown, Pa.; one sister, Marjorie Minton of Apollo Beach, Fla.; four granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester F. Stine and Chaplain Robert E. Keener will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary M. Grove


BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Mary Madeline Grove, 88, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Nov. 30, 1914, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Bessie Murphy Fortney.

Her husband, Lt. Col. George Kermit Grove, died in 1976. They were married June 17, 1933.

She graduated from high school in Morgan County.

She was employed as a cafeteria manager for the public school system in Harford County, Md.

She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Berkeley Chapter 77 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Flora M. Staggs; and one infant brother.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where a memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by the Order of the Eastern Star.

Russell W. Smith Jr.


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Russell W. "Bud" Smith Jr., 75, of 13516 Waterloo Road, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Jan. 17, 1928, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Russell W. Smith Sr. and Hattie G. Rowe Smith. He lived in Rouzerville, Pa., until 1952.

He attended Rouzerville Academy.

He retired from Patriot Federal Credit Union.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II.

He was a member of VFW Post 695, American Legion Post 15, Elks Lodge 731 and Eagle's Club, all in Waynesboro; Happy Face Travel Club; and AARP.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty A. McCarney Smith; two daughters, Patricia A. Fetterman of West Chester, Pa., and Bertie L. Shank of Waynesboro; one son, Russell W. Smith III of Waynesboro; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Michele D. Smith.
