Conococheague triumphs over Halfway for 9-10 title

WILLIAMSPORT - Conococheague Little League 9-10 All-Stars manager Mike Iseminger was looking for somebody to bail his team out of a jam.

Halfway Little League had just tied the game 2-2 during the bottom of the third inning and still had the bases loaded with one out.

Iseminger turned to Darryl Shirley for some relief. Shirley made Iseminger look like a genius.

Shirley shut down Halfway's offense, escaping the third-inning jam and retiring 10 of Halfway's final 12 batters.

Given a second life, Conococheague scored twice in the fourth to pull out a 4-2 victory Friday afternoon to win the Maryland District 1 Tournament 9- & 10-year-old championship.

"I knew that Darryl could do a good job pitching in relief," Iseminger said. "He just did exactly what we asked him to do. He shut down their offense, basically."

Conococheague went through the double-elimination district tournament 5-0 while handing Halfway (4-2) both of its losses.

"I feel real good going through the tournament undefeated," Iseminger said. "We weren't hitting the ball as well as what we should have, but we did well enough to get the runs when we needed them."

With one out and the bases loaded in the fourth, Andrew Moats singled to right to drive in Tyler Byers, and Devon Byrd also scored on the play on a throwing error to give Conococheague a 4-2 lead.

Conococheague opened the scoring in the first when Stephen Christy scored on a sacrifice fly by Dustin Violet, and doubled its lead in the third when Connor Arnone scored on a wild pitch.

Halfway scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third when Tyler Miles singled home Jordan Payne and Shane Muldoon scored on a bases-loaded walk to Zach Sauble.

Conococheague will host District 2 champion Frederick in a best-of-3 series in the Section I Tournament on July 19-21.
