Frederick police to close some streets for Fourth

July 03, 2003

FREDERICK, Md. - Police will close streets for Frederick's July Fourth celebration in Baker Park, at 2nd and Bentz streets, and are asking visitors to help ease congestion problems after the city's fireworks display Friday night.

The following streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday:

  • West 2nd Street between North Bentz Street and College Avenue.

  • College Avenue between West 2nd Street and Carroll Parkway.

  • Carroll Parkway between North Bentz Street and College Avenue.

  • Fleming Avenue.

  • West College Terrace between Carroll Parkway and West 2nd Street.

Police have several parking and driving suggestions as well:

  • Frederick High School, Parkway Elementary School and all city garages will be open for parking.

  • There will also be free parking at Thomas Johnson High School, with free shuttle service to Baker Park beginning at 11:30 a.m. The last shuttle will leave from the park for Thomas Johnson at 10:30 p.m.

  • Drivers should be prepared for long waits after the fireworks. Police suggest parking close to main streets - such as North Market and Patrick Street - following traffic officer's signals and following traffic flows, which will be directed to main traffic arteries.

  • Traffic police may not have time to speak with drivers. If drivers have questions before the festivities, they should call Lt. Patrick O'Brien, 301-694-2115, or Sgt. Shawn Perry, 301-624-1252.

The fireworks begin at dusk.
