Poker Run raises $500 for new library fund

July 02, 2003

SMITHSBURG - Threatening skies and cool temperatures didn't stop the 50 motorcycle riders who rallied through Washington County June 22 to raise money for the Smithsburg Library.

The second annual Smithsburg Library Poker Run added $500 to the building fund by combining the popular card game with the joys of motorcycling, according to Judith Ferro of the Smithsburg Library.

The 100-mile course featured five stations where participants stopped to get cards. At the end, prizes are given for the four best poker hands.

Prizes were $100 for first, $75 for second, $50 for third and $25 for fourth.

The winners were Tuck Koontz, S.R. Showe, Henry Allenberg and Clarence Nutt.

The current 1,096-square-foot library on East Water Street will be replaced by a 10,000-square-foot library in Veterans Memorial Park on West Water Street.
